A Medieval Illuminated Initial

Illuminated letters were large, decorative letters used at the beginning of a text, chapter, or paragraph, often seen in medieval manuscripts. The term “illuminated” comes from the Latin, “illuminaire”, meaning “to light up” – referring to the use of gold, silver, and vibrant colours that made the letters appear to glow. The tradition began in the early Middle Ages, around the 5^thCentury, and flourished in Europe until the invention of the printing press in the 15^th Century. Illuminated manuscripts were typically created by monks in monasteries, who painstakingly hand-copied texts and embellished them with intricate designs featuring animals, plants and religious themes.

Illuminated letters served both artistic and functional purposes. They marked the beginning of important passages, helped guide readers through the text, and conveyed status and reverence, particularly in religious or royal documents. Today, they are considered as works of art in their own right, admired for their craftsmanship and are studied as part of art history and calligraphy.
